Who We Are: HistoryThe Puerto Rico Film Commission was created by act of law primarily to develop the arts and sciences of the film industry on the island, in addition to offering incentives to off-island producers who may want to carry out their shoot in Puerto Rico. Our primary incentive is an industry high 40 percent tax credit. Part of our plan is also to provide incentives for the building of a cinematographic infrastructure, the purchase of equipment and for the establishment of distributorships in Puerto Rico We have also included in our planning the creation of a center where film producers may obtain all the permits they will need to start shooting. In the decade of the nineties the institute’s promotions of the island as a shooting site has had considerable success with the filming of “Amistad,” by Steven Spielberg, “Goldeneye,” of the James Bond series and “Captain Ron” and “Contact” by director Robert Zemeckis. The Legislature approved a risk capital fund to promote Puerto Rican small businesses and also to be used by filmmakers. The program played a significant role increasing the number of native film projects. The law was so successful promoting film projects that the Legislature followed up with a fund specifically directed at the movie industry. Five local film projects were completed and it was agreed to fund nine more. The law remained on the books but unfortunately, all that was produced were B Movies. This commission plans to change that. In fact, we intend to be the best at the service of the best. |
