About Puerto Rico: Quick Facts
- "The Argentine" opened its production offices in Puerto Rico in July. Filming in spanish "The Argentine" follows the life of Che Guevara during the cuban revolution. Puertorrican actor Benicio del Toro is playing Che and Steven Soderbergh is directing. Currently in Spain, filming in Puerto Rico is slated to begin in September around the mountains in the rainforest area and lasting six weeks.
- Puerto Rico offers a beautiful year-round climate in the 80's providing 365 days of location shooting.
- Puerto Rico is the oldest jurisdiction under the US Flag.
- "Wire" HBO series filmed parts of its last episode here in Puerto Rico in July. The filming was done in La Perla.
- Ruido, El Clown, Cimarrón, Ángel and Maldeamores are the five films that are being evaluated, by the Puerto Rico Film Commission Committee, for next years Oscar Considerations. The committee has until October 1st to select and send the film to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for consideration in the Foreign Language Category. In 1989 Santiago, directed by Jacobo Morales, was nominated by the academy.
- The central part of the island is a mountanous area where producers will escape from the beach locations and find a mixture of the culture and environment unique to its area. Waterfalls, indigenous parks and jungles are part of the locations found here.
- Puerto Rico's metro area is where most of the productions film when deciding their locations.
- The TNT Mini-series "The Company" is in DVD after airing from August 5th to the 12th. One of the episodes, the Bay of Pigs operative, was filmed at the beginning of this year in Puerto Rico.
- "El Cantante", starring Marc Anthony and Jennifer López opened in local theaters on August 2nd. It has been the leading movie seen by the local theater crowd. Screening in 36 theaters, El Cantante was the number one film seen over the weekend, with The Simpson Movie and The Bourne Ultimatum placing second and third respectively.
- Local Producer/Director/Writer/Actor, Jacobo Morales's new film "Angel" is in local theaters. In this movie, Jacobo Morales, explores the action/thriller genre and abandons the nostalgic themes found in his other films; including his Oscar nominated ¿Lo que le paso a Santiago?. Combining fact with fiction, Ángel, starts with the liberation of a University of Puerto Rico professor from prison and goes along as he seeks revenge from the people who framed him and sent him to jail.
- Puerto Rico's northern coast is another favorite area with producers because of the variation of locations that are easily accessible. Caves, beaches, colonial towns and of course the Radiotelescope in Arecibo,the largest in the world, are some of the locations you can find here.
- In the west of Puerto Rico, you will find the longest airstrip in the Caribbean at Borinquen Airport in Aguadilla. Surfer's delight and many great beaches are located in this area. Also the only ice skating rink in Puerto Rico is located here.
- Originally titled "Reggaeton", "Feel the Noise" will open in theaters on October 5th. Filmed in Puerto Rico during the summer of 2006, this independent film is produced by "Nuyorican Productions" owned by puertorrican actress Jennifer Lopez.
- "Cuestion de Piel", a "novela" produced by CDP Films began its filming in July. This production is slated to be filming until February of 2008 in Dorado and the San Juan Metropolitan area. It´s broadcast will be on Channel 13 of Chile and other Latin American Markets.
- Puerto Rico's infrastructure is unmatched in the Caribbean.
- The east of the island is where "La Cordillera Central" starts and El Yunque Rainforest is located. Many films have been shot in this area. With five star resorts in the area and a short drive from San Juan, it is one of the best areas to shoot in.
- San Juan and the Metro Area will take you from the 16th century to the present. From walking in history to driving in the present, producers are able to re-enact any place in the world in this area of Puerto Rico.
- Illegal Tender opened in theaters on August 24th. Filmed in Puerto Rico during the summer of 2006, the movie had a premiere in New York City on August 20th. Written and directed by Franc Reyes, Illegal Tender, stars Rick González, Wanda De Jesus and internationally known reggaeton singer from Puerto Rico Tego Calderón.
- Puerto Rico's south side is where the Caribbean washes the whole coast. The arid vegetation here is completely different from the northern part of the island.
- Island Heat productions is filming its fourth television movie for Lifetime in Puerto Rico. After filmiing three last year and identifying the island as San Carlos, in this years movie "Christmas in Paradise" the island will be playing as Puerto Rico. Directed by Sheldon Larry and starring Colin Ferguson and Charlotte Ross, the production is filming in Old San Juan and the Grand Melia Hotel Resort in Río Grande.
- Puerto Rico has a crew base that can handle at least two films at the same time.
